She who wakes early

leave a comment »

The first sensation is of cold. Then, gradually, as she transitions between the deep void of sleep and swims back to wakefulness, the cold becomes tolerable, becomes pleasurable. She brushes her legs against the tender fabric of her bed covers and tightens her arms around the soft pillow, its cover cool against her cheek. It is too early in the morning to be waking but out of sheer habit, thanks to her faultless body clock, here she was stirring on this ungodly hour, even when she had the alarms off to distinguish the weekend from the workweek. There was no going back to sleep now.

She turned from her side and lay on her back, searching her mind for a thought, anything, something. Then there it was, the previously discarded beginnings of a character summoned in her mind. She would assume this identity for the next hour in bed. She would write this character’s sob story, so often it is, and add flesh to the rough sketch.

She began casting about for a name.
